The goal of CDL’s Parent Involvement initiative is to increase student achievement by providing parents with the training, information, and support they need to become active and informed participants in their children’s education. Research overwhelmingly demonstrates the positive effect of parent involvement on academic achievement, but not all parents know how to help their children succeed.
Key outcomes are:
- parents who are better informed about the educational needs of their children
- parents who are better equipped to support their children’s
education experience
- increased dialogue between parents and their children’s
teachers
- strengthened partnerships among parents and teachers, administrators,
and other school personnel who work together to meet children’s
educational needs
- increased parent involvement at the school-site
- increased student success
Target Group
Parents and primary care givers of children ages birth-grade 12.
Content & Activities
School-based parent events in the form of facilitated conversations and workshops
inform, educate and serve as a forum for discussion on topics such as “Parenting the Struggling Reader”, “Ways to Improve Your Child’s Reading Comprehension”, “How to Help With Homework”, “Increasing Oral Language Skills”, “Dealing with Adolescent Behaviors”, “Fun Math Around the House” and “LEAP 21 Overview.” Ultimately, parent study groups will be encouraged to identify, plan, and implement concrete action steps to help improve their children’s education, such as forming “play and learn” groups.
In addition to CDL’s professional staff, community leaders and consultants, teachers and principals from the participating school are increasingly utilized as presenters at these events. To make the events attractive to working parents, typical barriers to attendance are removed: a light dinner will be provided for the whole family, child care will be provided for young children, and fun, age-appropriate activities will be held for older children while the parents are in “class.” The dinner component promotes relaxed conversation between parents and school faculty in a non-threatening setting. The
atmosphere is friendly and conversational, and incentives and
door prizes for both children and parents who attend add healthy
fun to the events.
Initiative Specifics
Parent Involvement is a nine-month initiative, in which parents attend four to six school-based learning events. Parents who attend the school-based engagement events will be invited to join smaller groups of 10 to 12 parents each that will meet to
study, discuss, and explore topics of interest to the parents with facilitation
first by consultants, and as parent leadership emerges, by parent facilitators.
Initiative Staff
Parent Involvement is implemented by CDL professionals and consultants who have expertise in parent involvement.
Customize for Your School
CDL will customize this initiative to fit the unique needs of your school’s
